Women suffering abuse in upper Bucks County have a new place to go for help.

A Woman's Place, Bucks County's only domestic violence agency, has opened a legal advocacy office at the Bucks County Government Center on Route 309, Quakertown.

In the past, women from the northern portion of the county had to drive to Doylestown to meet with legal counselors about obtaining protection-from-abuse orders or to access shelters and other services.

''It is hard for people to get down to there from other areas of the county,'' A Woman's Place spokeswoman Kelly Freter said. ''Sometimes, people just have questions about PFAs, what they do or don't do.''

Freter said abused women are often afraid to discuss their problems from home over the phone.

For now, the Upper Bucks office will be open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays. The office shares space with the Bucks County division of Legal Aid. The office hopes eventually to expand its hours.

Bucks County is expected to sell the building in 2008, after its new government center is completed in Richland Township. Freter said A Woman's Place will have to move then.

''We are pursuing a permanent Upper Bucks location,'' she said.
